A boiler is a type of system used to heat a home through heating water. Most homes have either a boiler or a furnace, and instead of heating water like a boiler does, a furnace heats air which is then distributed to the home through vents and ducts. While boilers typically have less problems due to the closed system, when there is a problem it usually turns into a big one. Here are the 3 most common boiler problems that you may experience in your home.
1. Kettling. Probably the most common problem that home owners experience with a boiler is called Kettling. You know how a kettle sounds when the water is ready for tea? Well, picture that on a much larger scale. Kettling in boilers is caused by the water pressure building up to a dangerous point. Most people notice the problem because the boiler is making very loud, rumbling sound which is basically the boiler trying to control the increase of pressure. Kettling can be treated by calling a boiler repair service or a Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) technician. Most the time a professional should have no problem coming to your home and assessing the problem. To treat kettling, it is likely that they will scrub the heat exchanger or install a water treatment system to discourage any future problems.
2. Leaking and Dripping. Another common boiler problem is when either the pipes or the boiler itself leaks water. If the pipes are leaking it could be a simple tightening or perhaps even condensation which has built up on the pipe. If the boiler is leaking, you may have a big problem. A common reason why boilers leak is because of corrosion which has worked its way to the surface. The best treatment for leaks or drips is to have a specialist come and access the problem.
3. Pilot Light Problems. A pilot light is a flame that is under the boiler and is used to light the burners that power the unit. Most people can quickly figure out if the pilot light goes out on their boiler. No hot water will be available, not matter how long you wait, and upon physical exam you will be able to see that the fire is out. This can be fixed quickly by simply relighting the pilot light by following the instructions on the side of the boiler. However, if the pilot light goes out again, you may need to contact a boiler repair service.
